The season is here for travel values
February 1 2010
As the New England winter rolls on, the prime time for travel bookings is upon us.
Over the next couple of months, prospective travelers can take advantage of several vacation events in the region.
First up is The Boston Globe Travel Show at the Seaport World Trade Center in Boston’s Seaport District from Friday, February 19 through Sunday, February 21.
Aruba Tourism will again serve as the supporting sponsor for the show, with other lead sponsors including JetBlue, Vacation Outlet and Busch Entertainment (Busch Gardens, Discovery Cove, Sea World and Aquatica).
The 2010 show will have a much stronger airline presence than in previous years as Logan Airport continues to show improving passenger figures.
JetBlue is a show sponsor. Other airlines coming aboard include: Icelandair; the airline of the Azores and Portugal, SATA; along with Virgin America. Last year the show ranked #1 for consumer traffic in the U.S.
Last year, the show attracted over 17,000 consumers, as well as 1,600 travel trade professionals who attended educational seminars on the opening day of the show.
This year, most of Friday will again be open exclusively to the travel trade for seminars and access to the show floor. Friday evening, beginning at 5:30 p.m., the show will open to the public featuring pavilions showcasing worldwide destinations, vacation planning, show specials, seminars, music and dancing presentations, kids activities and cooking demonstrations.
Up next is the AAA Southern New England Travel Marketplace, at Gillette Stadium’s Fidelity Investments Clubhouse in Foxborough, from March 5 through 7.
That weekend will feature cruises, tours, packages and drive vacations. It will also offer up many AAA resources such as atlases, maps, TripTiks and TourBooks. Featured destinations will include Mexico, the Caribbean, Europe, Alaska, Canada, Las Vegas and Orlando. Parking for the AAA event is free.
That same weekend, the National Golf Expo, the region’s largest golf show, will take place at the Seaport World Trade Center. The weekend will feature three football fields worth of golf-related exhibits, including golf-themed vacation options.
The first-ever Romance Travel Expo is taking place at the Boston Marriott Burlington on Sunday, March 14 from 10 a.m. through 4 p.m. There will be no charge for admission and a heavy focus on destination weddings and honeymoons, as well as other romantic travel opportunities. The show, being presented by the Robertson Group, Evolve Management and A Girl’s Gotta Go, will be full-service with planning and booking opportunities, as well as show specials and prizes.
The Boston area will be the first market for this show because, according to Maria Robertson of the Robertson Group, New England is one of the strongest markets for destination wedding bookings.
The idea for the show came from recent travel booking trends for that category. Roberston also said that some couples see destination weddings as more cost-effective than traditional weddings.
On Tuesday, February 16, Travel New England and the retailers at South Station will present the annual Winter In The City event at South Station’s Grand Concourse 2:30-6 p.m., featuring vacation travel information and prizes for commuters passing through the station.
Among the exhibitors will be Amtrak and Amtrak Vacations, the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism, TNT Vacations and the United States Postal Service, who will feature information about obtaining passports.
